Symphony Goals

1. To provide live symphony music of high quality for the people of Prince Edward Island, and to contribute to the artistic life of the community through the presentation of a series of live concerts;

2. To provide experience and practical training in orchestral music for Island student and community musicians; to provide the members of the orchestra with the opportunity to learn orchestral music representative of all styles and periods, and to perform it in concert to the very best of their individual and collective technical and musical abilities; and

3. To provide gifted PEI performers with the opportunity to perform with a large orchestra.

Brief History

The PEISO received its letters patent on April 16, 1968, at a time of great optimism, when Prince of Wales College (a non-denominational institution) was expanding from a two-year college to a four-year degree-granting institution. This expansion attracted many young, bright and eager faculty to the renewed college. Two years later, the government was forced to amalgamate Prince of Wales College with the old Catholic St. Dunstan's University to create a new, larger, non-denominational University of Prince Edward Island.
